Understand payment statuses
What each status on a payment means, in the order a payment moves through them.
The life of a payment
A payment moves through a fixed sequence of states and cannot skip one. Knowing where it is tells you what, if anything, you need to do.
The statuses
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | Created but not yet submitted. No money has moved. | Submit it, or edit and submit. |
| Pending approval | Waiting for a second person to approve (four-eyes). | Ask your authoriser to approve; you cannot approve your own. |
| Screening | Being checked against sanctions lists. | Nothing — a clear result moves it on automatically. |
| Processing | Approved and screened; being sent on its rail. | Nothing — settlement is under way. |
| Settled | Funds have left and the ledger is posted. Final. | Done. Trace it if the beneficiary queries receipt. |
| Returned | The beneficiary bank sent it back. | Check the return reason and correct the details. |
| Rejected | Failed validation or screening before settlement. | Read the reason code and fix, then resubmit. |
| Recalled | A recall you requested has been actioned. | Confirm the credit back to your account. |
Stuck in one status?
Good to know
A payment resting in Screening or Processing longer than usual is normal around cut-off times and after a sanctions hit that needs manual review. If it has not moved by the next business morning, raise an enquiry.
