Trace a payment (SWIFT gpi / UETR)
Follow a cross-border payment across every bank in the chain using its UETR and read the gpi status.
What a trace tells you
A SWIFT gpi trace shows where a cross-border payment currently is: which bank in the chain holds it, whether it has been credited to the beneficiary, how much was deducted in correspondent charges along the way, and the FX rate if a conversion happened. It answers the question customers ask most — "where is my money?" — with evidence rather than a guess.
How to trace
- 1Open the payment from your payment list. Its UETR (unique end-to-end transaction reference) is shown on the detail page.
- 2Click Trace. The portal queries the gpi status for that UETR and returns the chain: originator bank, any intermediaries, and the beneficiary bank.
- 3Read the status: In progress (still travelling), Credited (funds delivered to the beneficiary), or Rejected/Returned with a reason.
- 4Note any charges deducted by an intermediary — this explains why a beneficiary sometimes receives slightly less than sent under a SHA charge option.
If the trace shows it is stuck
If a payment sits at an intermediary bank longer than expected, it is usually awaiting a compliance check or missing information. Raise an enquiry (see "Raise and track an enquiry") quoting the UETR — that reference lets the operations team query the holding bank directly.
Keep the UETR from the moment you send. It is the single reference that works across every bank on the route — sort codes, account numbers and internal references do not travel the whole way, but the UETR does.
