Send a SWIFT international payment
A guided walkthrough for a cross-border payment: from picking the rail to keeping the UETR for tracking.
Follow these steps
Work top to bottom — each step sets up the next.
-
1
Choose SWIFT and the debit account
Payments -> New payment, rail SWIFT. Select the account in the currency you are sending from — the currency you debit sets the FX, if any.
Sending a currency you do not hold? Book the FX first so the bought currency is there to pay from. -
2
Enter the beneficiary and their bank
Add the beneficiary IBAN or account number and the bank BIC. The portal decodes the BIC to bank, country and location so you can confirm the institution.
-
3
Add an intermediary if prompted
If the beneficiary bank is not directly reachable, the portal asks for an intermediary BIC. Enter it to route the payment correctly.
A correct routing avoids extra correspondent hops and their fees. -
4
Pick the charge option
Choose OUR (you pay all charges, beneficiary gets the full amount), SHA (shared, the common default) or BEN (beneficiary pays). Use OUR when the received amount must be exact.
-
5
Add remittance and submit
Enter an invoice or contract reference the beneficiary can reconcile, then submit for approval. A second authoriser releases it under four-eyes.
-
6
Keep the UETR
Once released, note the UETR on the payment detail. It is the reference you use to trace the payment across every bank in the chain.
Give the UETR to the beneficiary if they need to chase their side — it works across all the banks on the route.
