Book FX and settle a cross-border payment

Convert currency at a fixed rate and pay it out, with the FX and payment value dates aligned.

5 steps about 7 min

Follow these steps

Work top to bottom — each step sets up the next.

  1. 1

    Book the FX deal

FX -> New deal. Choose the pair and direction, enter the amount, and pick a value date (Spot T+2, TOM T+1, or a forward). Confirm to fix the rate.

  2. 2

    Note the FX value date

The bought currency arrives on the FX value date. Your onward payment must settle on or after that date so you are not paying from money that has not landed.

For a same-day chain, check both the FX cut-off and the payment rail cut-off — the earlier one governs.
  3. 3

Create the payment from the bought currency

Payments -> New payment, debit the account in the bought currency, and choose the rail for the beneficiary (usually SWIFT for cross-border).

  4. 4

    Set the charge option

Pick OUR, SHA or BEN depending on who should bear correspondent fees and what the beneficiary must receive.

  5. 5

    Submit, approve and reconcile

Submit for approval; on release the payment settles. Reconcile the FX settlement and the payment against your ledger, matching on the references.
